APPROVED ALL MAJOR INSURANCE COMPANY windshield repair with insurance

Houston Auto Glass Repair – Insurance Claims

 Insurance Claims Process

Auto Glass is approved by most major auto insurance companies to provide repairs and replacements for their policyholders. We use only the finest materials and most advanced adhesive products to ensure that your windshield and window repairs stand up to the extremes of temperature and weather experienced in Houston during a typical year. Our professional claims experts can help you navigate the complex world of insurance forms and deductibles to arrive at the most cost-effective solution for your auto glass repair and replacement requirements.

How Glass Claims Work

Damage to your vehicle will usually only be covered under certain circumstances:

  • If you are involved in a collision and the other driver is at fault, his or her insurance will typically cover all damage to your vehicle to include auto glass repair or replacement costs.
  • Comprehensive physical damage coverage pays for auto glass damage caused by vandalism, theft, or other covered events not related to an accident.
  • Collision insurance covers the repair costs for damages resulting from accidents in which you are judged to be at fault. This includes auto glass replacement costs as well as any other damage to your vehicle.

Liability-only insurance will not cover any part of the cost of auto glass repair for your vehicle. In most cases, however,  Auto Glass can work with you to find the most cost-effective solution even when insurance will not pay for the repairs.

Repairs Are Less Costly Than Replacement

Many of the major insurance companies serving the Houston area will waive your deductible if your auto glass can be repaired rather than replaced. If the damage to the glass is not severe and does not obstruct the driver’s field of vision,  Auto Glass can usually repair the crack or chip using advanced polymer technologies that restore the stability of the windshield or window and prevent the damage from spreading.

Complete  Replacement Services

If you do need a full windshield or window replacement,  Auto Glass will work with you to identify the most cost-effective strategy for your vehicle. We use only factory-approved glass and adhesives to ensure the quality and the durability of your replacement. Our technicians can help you choose the most affordable and appropriate solution for replacing the windshield or a window on your car or truck.Auto Glass, we are committed to providing you with the assistance you need to manage your insurance claims in the most cost-effective way possible.

HOW TO CLAIM GLASS REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT

A crack or chip in your windshield is important to repair. Your windshield is at risk for damage from flying objects like debris from a truck, rocks, or even from storm damage. Maybe you hit a bird while driving or the neighbor kid hit a baseball into your vehicle. The potential causes are numerous, but the underlying question is, does your car insurance cover windshield damage?

It all depends on what type of car insurance policy you have.

Comprehensive Coverage

Windshields and any other damaged window in your vehicle would be considered a comprehensive claim. So you are only covered if you purchased comprehensive coverage, which is sometimes referred to as “other than collision coverage,” before the damage occurred. Find out if you have comprehensive coverage on your vehicle by checking your declaration page, calling your agent, or filing the claim and speaking with an adjuster.

Deductible

It is possible you have a deductible on your comprehensive coverage. When you add comprehensive coverage to your vehicle, a deductible should be selected. Some companies offer a zero deductible on comprehensive, however, many times a deductible is chosen to reduce the overall cost of insurance. Many carriers also offer a deductible on comprehensive to cover the majority of comprehensive claims but offer a zero deductible specifically for glass damage. Check your policy to see what your deductible is for comprehensive claims.

If the cost of repairs is even slightly greater than your deductible, you should consider filing a claim. Most of the time, repairing a windshield won’t raise your premium amounts all that much, as it doesn’t really signal risky driving behavior in the way that, say, an at-fault accident would.

Full Glass Coverage

Many states are beginning to offer full glass coverage as an add-on to your insurance policy. If you’ve decided to purchase full glass coverage, you won’t have to even pay the deductible for repairing or replacing your windshield.

Don't Procrastinate Filing a Glass Claim

Often a small chip will begin to crack over time requiring a full windshield replacement. If you have a small chip in your windshield, many times the glass can be repaired. Usually, insurance carriers cover chips which are repaired without a deductible, as long as comprehensive coverage is listed on your vehicle. The sooner you have a chip filled, the less likely it is to spread into a crack.

What If I Can't Pay My Deductible?

Options are available if you cannot afford to pay your deductible.

Put off your repair until you can save up the money. However, repairing your glass in a timely fashion is important and can result in a fix-it ticket from a police officer if you are caught with a cracked windshield.

Check with reputable glass companies in your area to see if they will waive a part or all of your deductible. Glass companies are hungry for your business and will waive your deductible in order to get your business. Usually, only the largest glass companies are able to remain profitable after waiving your deductible.

Remember comprehensive coverage covers more than just deer accidents. The only way your windshield is covered by your insurance is if you purchase comprehensive. If you have a bare-bones policy with PLPD coverage only, you will have to repair or replace your glass on your own. Make sure you learn about your car insurance coverage before the time comes to file a claim. windshield repair with insurance and windshield replacement with insurance houston katy cypress

Why Use GEICO’s Windshield Repair?

  • It’s convenient. You don’t have to take time off work or rent a car while the repair is being completed. A technician will come to your home or place of work and do the repair on the spot.
  • It’s quick. The repair is done while you wait. In most cases, that means approximately 30 minutes.
  • It’s inexpensive. The deductible for windshield repair is waived if you carry comprehensive coverage.
  • You can avoid other problems. Replacing a windshield, instead of repairing it, involves breaking the original factory seal. That can make the area around the windshield more prone to leaks, which can lead to additional problems.
  • You can help protect the environment. Because a layer of laminate is fused to windshield glass, it’s more difficult to recycle. By repairing your existing windshield, disposal isn’t an issue.

“First time using online service and made a claim to have my windshield replaced. After a terrible day, using this claims service online that was simple, fast and easy, it really made things a lot better and weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I’m thrilled to know in addition that I am covered, with service coming to my home. With a new baby coming in just a couple of weeks I didn’t think I’d be able to afford a replacement. I’m happy to know my family will be safe and I don’t have to worry. So very grateful for this wonderful service.”
— Heather C. from New York

Beware Fraudulent “Glass Repair Technicians”

Filing a glass claim with your insurer may seem like a hassle, but it’s better than trusting someone else to do it.

macro shot of a rock chip on windshield

When it comes to repairing or replacing your car’s windshield, ethical service contractors will expect you to file the claim yourself. Other contractors, sometimes called “glass repair technicians,” may try to get you to sign an Assignment of Benefits (AOB) form so they can file the claim on your behalf. Their resulting actions can make your personal information vulnerable and lead to an increase in your premium.

What does a Glass Repair Technician do?

A Glass Repair Technician is a contractor who approaches you and says that they can take care of your car’s glass issues on your behalf. They often approach you at gas stations, car washes, or other public spaces where they can see your car. To take legal ownership of your claim, they have you sign an AOB form and collect your personal information without fully explaining what they’re doing. On the surface, it looks like they solicit your insurance information, fix your vehicle, and collect money from GEICO without much effort on your part.

What’s the catch?

You’re providing your contractors with the authority to charge the insurance company whatever they want under your name. Those high costs may not come from your pocket, but they could increase your premium rates when your account lists an overcharge. In addition, when you sign your claim over to a contractor, you’re providing them with your sensitive personal information. This can lead to an abuse of your personal information and potential identity theft. Not all contractors participate in this fraudulent activity, but it’s not worth the risk.

What should I do instead?

If your vehicle’s glass is damaged, you can report your glass claim online, via the GEICO Mobile app, or by calling 1-800-510-2291. GEICO recommends the reputable auto glass experts at Safelite, but you have the ability to choose other repair service shops with your

This is a long form text area designed for your content that you can fill up with as many words as your heart desires. You can write articles, long mission statements, company policies, executive profiles, company awards/distinctions, office locations, shareholder reports, whitepapers, media mentions and other pieces of content that don’t fit into a shorter, more succinct space. windshield repair with insurance and windshield replacement with insurance houston katy cypress

Articles – Good topics for articles include anything related to your company – recent changes to operations, the latest company softball game – or the industry you’re in. General business trends (think national and even international) are great article fodder, too.

Mission statements – You can tell a lot about a company by its mission statement. Don’t have one? Now might be a good time to create one and post it here. A good mission statement tells you what drives a company to do what it does.

Company policies – Are there company policies that are particularly important to your business? Perhaps your unlimited paternity/maternity leave policy has endeared you to employees across the company. This is a good place to talk about that.

Executive profiles – A company is only as strong as its executive leadership. This is a good place to show off who’s occupying the corner offices. Write a nice bio about each executive that includes what they do, how long they’ve been at it, and what got them to where they are.

02

You can schedule the repair or replacement at your convenience

Keep in mind, the choice of where you get your repair or replacement done is yours. We recommend A+ Auto Glass or one of its affiliate shops to provide you with a quick and easy repair option.

In most cases, they can repair or replace your glass at your home or work, or you can go to one of their shops. It usually takes less than 30 minutes for repairs and 60 minutes for replacements, though it is recommended that you don’t drive your vehicle for at least one hour after a replacement. Safelite AutoGlass even guarantees their work and cleans out your car for free!

03

Your glass is fixed

If your glass can be repaired (and you have comprehensive coverage), you don’t have to pay anything. If it’s a full replacement, you may have to pay your deductible, depending on your state. Keep in mind, you might see a small blemish where the repair was completed. If you’re not satisfied, we’ll replace your windshield, but you have to pay your deductible, depending on your state.

Glass repairs vs. replacements

If the chip or crack in your windshield is less than 6 inches long (about the length of a dollar bill), then we’ll usually be able to repair it and no deductible will be applied. That means you won’t have to pay anything if you have comprehensive insurance. Comprehensive is an optional coverage, but most drivers add it to their policy.

If the crack is larger than 6 inches, then the windshield will likely need a full replacement. If your windshield needs to be replaced, your comprehensive insurance will still cover it. Depending on your state and policy, you’ll just need to pay your deductible. For instance, if it costs $800 to replace your windshield and your comprehensive deductible is $100, you’ll pay $100 towards a new windshield.

What you need to know about auto glass repairs

Learn more about when and why you should replace your windshield.

Dangers of a cracked windshield

While a crack in the glass may not seem like a big deal, it’s important to fix it immediately. Here’s why:

In many states, it’s unlawful to drive a car with a cracked windshield. Your windshield protects you from flying debris if you’re involved in an accident. If your windshield is cracked, it’s more likely to shatter or break. It could eventually impair your view while driving. It may affect your air bag from deploying properly. If your car flips over, the lack of windshield support could cause the roof to cave in.

Option for a $0 deductible on glass

In certain states, we offer a $0 deductible option on glass-only replacement claims. This $0 deductible will remain separate from your comprehensive deductible, giving you the flexibility to set both deductibles to your liking.

Reporting a glass claim

To report a claim, log In to your policy online, use the app, or call us anytime at 1-800-776-4737. You’ll want to report any glass damage as soon as possible so we can confirm comprehensive coverage applies to the damage.

With Progressive, you get to choose who repairs or replaces your windshield, and it can usually be fixed within 24 hours. We recommend A+ Auto Glass, the country’s largest auto glass replacement company, or one of its affiliated shops, but you’re free to choose anyone you trust to get the job done. The benefits of choosing Safelite AutoGlass or an affiliate shop include:

Guarantees: You’ll receive a warranty on all glass work for as long as you own or lease your vehicle. You can choose your own shop, but the work will have to be covered by that shop’s warranty and you should talk to your shop of choice.

Convenience: In most cases, you can choose to have the repairs done from your home, work, or at the shop.

Quality: All glass shops in Progressive’s network meet our strict quality requirements.

Price: Shops in our network agree to complete work at prearranged prices, which means you pay only your deductible, if applicable, and no surprise charges.

What are the benefits of using the USAA Auto Glass Network?

You have the right to use the shop of your choice to repair or replace your glass. We're prohibited by law from requiring that repairs be done at a specific shop, and your policy will cover the reasonable costs of repairing or replacing your glass no matter where you have repairs made.

Here are some benefits of using the USAA Auto Glass Network:

Lifetime warranty on parts and labor

Mobile service

Highly regarded WINDSHIELD replacement and repair technology

Trained, certified auto glass replacement technicians

Old windshields recycled, keeping more than 107 tons out of landfills

24/7 Twenty-four seven  scheduling online and live representatives available 365 days a year

How do I know if my auto glass damage should be repaired or replaced?

If your windshield damage is smaller than the length of a dollar bill, Safelite may be able to repair it. More extensive damage will likely require a full windshield replacement.

Can you guarantee that a chip or crack won't become larger during the repair process?

No. In some cases, through no fault of the repair technician, the attempt to repair a windshield can result in the chip or crack becoming larger. However, A+ Auto Glass can guarantee that upon completion of a successful repair, the chip or crack will not crack further and that the repair will pass any state vehicle inspection, or Safelite will credit the cost of the repair toward a replacement.windshield repair with insurance and windshield replacement with insurance houston katy cypress

Can you guarantee that a chip or crack will be invisible once repaired?

No. A windshield chip or crack repair is used to prevent further damage and to restore structural integrity. With most successful repairs, a slight blemish or imperfection where the impact occurred is normal. In most cases, you should expect the cosmetic appearance of the repair to show some improvement compared to the damage before the repair.

What kind of glass is covered?

The comprehensive coverage under your USAA Auto Insurance policy covers damage to various types of window glass, including windshields, side and rear windows, sunroofs, moon roofs and T-top panels. It doesn't cover headlights, tail lights or other types of glass.

How long will my auto glass repair or replacement take?

In many cases, windshield repairs are completed in 30 minutes or less. Windshield replacements often take no more than 60 minutes. However, we recommend that you don't drive the vehicle for at least one hour after service is completed.

Did you know your car’s windshield is a safety device? In addition to its primary role of protecting vehicle occupants from wind, water and debris, a windshield can help reduce crash injuries and could even save your life or that of a passenger. How? In a collision, the windshield prevents most outside objects from penetrating into the vehicle interior. In many cars, the windshield also plays a critical role in front passenger airbag deployment. Finally, the windshield (and rear window) supports the vehicle roof in a rollover to help prevent it from collapsing.

(AAA image)

Windshield damage can compromise driver vision in addition to the safety features described above. This makes it important to check the windshield, and other glass, for problems on a regular basis. If your windshield is cracked or damaged in any way, you should contact your insurance company or an auto glass specialist to arrange for repair or replacement.

Glass Inspection and Cleaning

To keep windshields and other glass clean, use non-ammonia cleaners and soft cotton or microfiber towels that will remove dirt and grime without causing streaks. Ammonia-based cleaners can damage dash and upholstery materials, and window tint films as well.

Here are some tips on what to look for hen performing an auto glass inspection:

Check the glass, inside and out, for chips and cracks. Minor “star” or “bullseye” rock chips, and small cracks, may be repairable. Any significant damage calls for windshield replacement.

Tiny micro-pits build up on the windshield over time as airborne particles hit the glass at high speeds. These pits reduce vision when illuminated by oncoming headlights, or a rising/setting sun. The only practical fix for a badly pitted windshield  replacement.

Inspect the edges of the glass for damage to surrounding bodywork. Any problems that affect the seal of the glass to the body can weaken structural integrity and need repair.

Make sure the rubber windshield wiper blades are soft, pliable and clear water from the glass in a single swipe. Brittle blades can break and allow a metal wiper arm to scratch the glass.

Glass Repair

Today, innovative processes and materials make it possible for auto glass specialists to repair many types of windshield damage. Some auto insurance companies will cover glass repairs with no deductible because it costs less than windshield replacement. However, other carriers prefer that damaged windshields be replaced rather than repaired.

The size and location of a chip or crack determine whether it is suitable for repair. Chips smaller than a quarter and cracks less than a few inches long are usually repairable. Some states do not allow glass repairs in areas that are directly in the driver’s line of sight because even small fixes create distortion that can affect visibility and safety. Glass specialists also recommend replacing any windshield that has a crack extending from an edge. These types of cracks tend to spread quickly and easily, making it likely that a repair will be ineffective.

The glass repair process for chips and cracks involves injecting a polymer resin into the damaged area, allowing it to dry, and then smoothing the surface to make the imperfection nearly invisible. The outcome depends on the quality of the tools and resins, and the skill of the technician doing the work. Do-it-yourself glass repair kits are available from many sources, but the job may be better left to an expert. Professional auto glass technicians are equipped with more-sophisticated tools and advanced resins that help ensure a satisfactory repair.

Costs for windshield repairs vary by location, auto glass service provider and damage type. Typical prices range from $60 to $100 for a single chip, and discounts may apply when fixing additional chips on the same windshield. Crack repair prices are similar, although fixing a longer crack may cost $125 or more.

Glass Replacement

When replacing a windshield, use of the proper materials and techniques is critical to vehicle safety. For a job done right, motorists should choose an auto glass business that is a Registered Member Company with the Auto Glass Safety Council (AGSC) and employs AGSC Certified Technicians. The Independent Glass Association (IGA) and major glass repair chains such as Safelite also have technician training and certification programs. In some parts of the country, AAA Auto Glass® or AAA Approved Auto Glass SM facilities are available and offer member discounts.

Windshield replacement is covered under the comprehensive portion of auto insurance policies, less any applicable deductible. In a few states, insurance companies are required to waive the deductible for windshield replacement. This supports driving safety by allowing motorists to have damaged glass replaced promptly by an auto glass specialist at no cost.

Insurance carriers often use third-party companies to manage windshield replacement claims. These companies will typically recommend qualified installers to vehicle owners. However, owners are not required to accept the referrals, and have the final say on who actually performs the glass repair.

Cost And Other Considerations

For drivers without insurance coverage, windshield replacement costs vary by location, vehicle make and model, and type of glass used. Auto dealers use factory replacement glass, but independent glass installers typically use aftermarket windshields that often come from the factory supplier. In one study of average repair costs in 16 U.S. cities, a replacement windshield for a Honda Accord cost $250 to $300, while one for a BMW X6 ranged from $350 to $450.

Be wary of cut-rate installers with lowball prices. Some use low-quality glass that may not meet all of the original equipment standards. For example, some bargain windshields have optical distortion that can be distracting to a driver. If the reflection of a piece of graph paper held perpendicular to the glass shows significant “ripple,” a better piece of glass is called for.

If your car is equipped with an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) that uses a camera mounted behind the windshield, original equipment replacement glass may be required and the ADAS system must be calibrated after the new glass is installed. Some auto glass installers can perform this important procedure on some cars, but in many cases the vehicle will need to be taken to a dealer for calibration.

After a windshield installation is completed, inspect the work. Make sure the glass is flush with the body and check for proper centering. Where visible, the gap between the glass and the car body should be consistent across the top and down both sides. If a molding is used it should lie flat and even all the way around the glass with no visible bumps or gaps. When driving, there should be no “whistling” or other indications of air leaks around the glass. If you find any problems, contact the installer to have them corrected.

Finding Quality Auto Repair

AAA recommends that you plan ahead for vehicle service by finding an auto repair shop and technician you can trust before you need them. AAA.com/Repair provides information on nearly 7,000 Approved Auto Repair facilities that have met AAA’s high standards for appearance, technician training and certification, insurance coverage and customer satisfaction. AAA regularly inspects every Approved Auto Repair facility and surveys their customers to ensure ongoing performance. In addition, AAA members receive special benefits that include auto repair discounts, an extended 24-month/24,000-mile parts and labor warranty, and AAA assistance in resolving repair-related issues.

What Is Auto Glass Insurance Coverage?

Full auto glass coverage pays for the cost to repair or replace your damaged auto glass or windshield with no deductible. You can add full auto glass insurance coverage to your car insurance policy for just a few dollars a month. Depending on the state you live in, this can be included in your comprehensive coverage or can be purchased as an add-on to your auto insurance policy. The availability of full auto glass insurance coverage varies by state.

How Full Glass Coverage Works

The advantage of full glass coverage is that it has no deductible.

Let’s say your car gets broken into overnight, and the windshield or a window is smashed. Luckily nothing is stolen, but you are still left with a broken window … and the estimate to repair it is $600.

If you have comprehensive car insurance but not auto glass coverage, you will have to pay your deductible before your auto insurance company pays. If you have a $500 deductible, you’d pay $500, and your auto insurance company would $100 to cover the repair.

If you have full glass coverage, your car insurance policy with The Hartford will cover the full cost of repairing the window or windshield, with no out-of-pocket costs to you.

WINDSHIELD REPLACEMENT AND REPAIR CLAIM

Just about everyone experiences it eventually – driving along on a beautiful sunny day, radio blasting, singing along, and suddenly you hear it – crack! A pebble or some other piece of debris flies out from under the tire of the car ahead of you, hitting your windshield dead-center. Whether it causes a tiny chip or a bigger crack, you need to get it fixed. So now you’re wondering, does car insurance cover cracked windshields? windshield repair with insurance and windshield replacement with insurance houston katy cypress

Comprehensive Insurance Covers a Cracked Windshield

Even if it’s a tiny crack, you need to get it fixed – small cracks rarely stay small. The good news is that any comprehensive policy should cover auto glass repair or even windshield replacement, as long as the crack was from a covered event. Depending on your policy, windshield repair (rather than replacement) might not cost you anything, so check with your insurance company or agent before doing anything.

Before filing a claim, of course, you’ll want to be sure it’s worth it. If you only carry liability insurance, you will have to cover the cost yourself regardless, but even with comprehensive coverage you should consider your deductible. If the cost of windshield crack repair is less than or even slightly more than your deductible, it would probably not be worthwhile to file a claim.

Will the Claim Affect Your Premium?

Depending on where you live and on your specific policy, a deductible might not even apply. Some states require that for windshield repair, insurance companies cannot apply a deductible. Even outside of states with this requirement, your policy might not include a deductible for glass repair, so check your policy or talk to your agent to be sure.

Regardless, though, you’ll also want to consider the impact a claim will have on your rates. In most cases, if the window damage wasn’t caused by a collision, it won’t affect your rates. This isn’t a universal rule, though, so once again check the details of your policy.

Can It Be Repaired?

You might have been asking yourself, “Will my insurance cover windshield repair?” Usually, the better question to start with is whether it can be repaired at all or if you’ll need auto glass replacement instead. While windshield chip repair is always an option, cracks can only be repaired when they are small – less than six inches. That’s about the size of a dollar bill. If it’s bigger than that, the glass needs to be replaced.

Repairing the glass will always cost less than replacement. If you’re paying out-of-pocket, you’ll most likely want to use the less expensive option. If your insurance is covering it, they’ll probably decide for you whether to repair or replace and will typically go with the least expensive viable option.

Filing the Claim

If you’ve determined that your windshield damage is indeed covered by your insurance and that filing a claim is your best option, your next step is to contact your insurance company or agent to start the claims process. Depending on your insurance company, you might be able to start the claim online or with a mobile app as well.

The company will determine whether you do have a valid claim and might suggest a repair shop – keep in mind that in most cases you can choose to use a different repair shop if you prefer. This is usually mandated by law. Either way, have the repairs completed and then submit your receipt to the insurance company, along with whatever information they request – at minimum your name and policy number, but they might ask for additional info.

Windshield cracks can be distracting and therefore dangerous, and small cracks will eventually become large ones if you ignore them. It is important, therefore, that you have them repaired immediately. Check your coverage now so that you’ll know what to expect if it ever happens to you.

WINDSHIELD REPLACEMENT AND REPAIR CLAIM

Rocks and gravel, damage from weather and even temperature changes are all common causes of a cracked, broken or chipped windshield. It might surprise you that repairing a cracked windshield is actually a pretty simple fix — as long as you take care of it right away. Because what may seem like a small, insignificant crack at first could turn into a bigger, more expensive problem if left unrepaired.

We know the question you want answers to: Will my insurance cover windshield repair and replacement? The short answer is yes! With some minor stipulations. We’ve highlighted some key information about windshield repair and replacement to help you understand how your insurance helps cover you from these small but impactful damages.

Do I Need a windshield Repair or a Replacement?

Did you know that a small chip or crack reduces the strength of a windshield by up to 70%*? And eventually those small cracks spread into larger cracks that just might require a full replacement (which means more money out of your pocket). Getting your chip or crack repaired right away helps preserve the structural integrity of the windshield, which is a critical safety feature of your vehicle, and almost always prevents damage from spreading into a more costly replacement.

To determine if your windshield needs a simple repair or a full-on replacement, you’ll need to identify what kind of damage exists. For example, if you have a small break, like a half-moon, bullseye, star or combination, you’ll typically be able to get a quick repair — which usually only takes about 30 minutes to fix!

Here’s a list of common types of cracks:

Chip or ding. Usually, small chips or dings are caused by a rock or other hard object hitting the windshield and taking out a small chunk of glass. Though small and usually not impeding your line of sight, a chip or ding could eventually spread and require a full windshield replacement. So take the time to get it repaired right away!

Bullseye. A bullseye crack looks just like its name — and it’s usually one of the most common types of windshield damage. The good news is it’s one of the most repairable kinds of cracks.

Stress crack. A stress crack occurs when your windshield is exposed to extreme variations in temperature in a short amount of time. For instance things like extreme or swift temperature changes like cranking up the A/C or heat can cause a chip to expand into a larger crack, or if you put hot water on your ice-covered windshield, a stress crack may form.

Edge and floater crack. An edge crack is formed near the edge of your windshield, whereas a floater crack is near the center of the windshield. These kinds of cracks usually cover a large area of your windshield and will need a full replacement. Over time, all the bumps and other impacts that occur during driving can cause the edge or floater crack to worsen.

Does My Insurance Cover Windshield Replacement or Repair?

Insurance coverage for windshield replacement or repair depends on what type of coverage you have and the extent of the damage.

If your windshield is damaged in a car accident, your collision insurance would cover repairs or replacement, but you’ll be required to pay a deductible, which is the amount you pay before your insurance company steps in.

No Deductible Windshield Replacement

Do you have comprehensive insurance? At American Family Insurance, if your windshield is repaired instead of replaced for a covered comprehensive loss, the deductible is usually waived. Keep in mind, if the windshield needs to be replaced, you’ll still be covered but a deductible may be applied.

How to File a Claim to Replace or Repair Your Windshield

American Family Insurance offers a glass repair program with our trusted partner, Safelite. With them, we’ll work quickly to get your windshield repaired or replaced so you can get back to more important things.

Make sure you file a claim before you take your vehicle in for repairs, since your agent can help you determine how you’re covered. Remember, a repair usually won’t cost you anything, but a replacement will often require a deductible.

Get in touch with our Glass Claims Department at 1-800-MYAMFAM (1-800-692-6326) or conveniently submit a claim online to Safelite.

Have the following information on hand when submitting your claim to make sure the process goes as quickly and smoothly as possible:

Policy number

Details about the damage

Make, model and year of your vehicle

VIN

Does a Windshield Claim Increase Insurance?

If you file a windshield claim, your insurance company typically won’t apply a surcharge, which is the rise in your insurance premium. However, if you do frequently file auto repair claims, your company could consider you a high-risk driver, which would cause a hike in your premium.

Don’t forget to weigh your options when deciding to file a claim. Are you required to pay a deductible? Is the deductible going to cost more than your repairs? If so, maybe consider paying out of pocket for the repairs and avoid adding a claim to your car insurance history.

At American Family Insurance, we want to make sure you’re confident and in the know about all the ways you’re covered. Your agent is always happy to answer any questions you have about how you’re protected — in the meantime, check out more about our claims process so you know just what to do to keep moving forward when dealing with the unexpected.

First, it’s a tiny chip. Then it becomes a crack. You watch it creep across your windshield, wondering how long you have before you absolutely have to fix it. Does insurance cover windshield repair? What about long cracks? Here’s what you need to know.

Smack. It’s the cringe-inducing sound of a pebble striking your windshield, and it’s usually followed by the appearance of a chip in the glass. It’s easy to ignore a chipped windshield, but you should have it fixed as soon as possible. Why? A windshield chip is a simple fix, but once it turns into a crack it’ll be a much more expensive windshield repair. Hot or cold weather conditions, or even driving on a bumpy road, can create cracks.

A chipped windshield is also a safety hazard. According to Safelite Auto Glass, a windshield provides up to 30 percent of a vehicle’s structural strength, and a weakened windshield may compromise your safety in a crash or rollover situation.

Will Insurance Cover Windshield Chip Repair?

The good news is that most auto insurance policies will pay for your windshield chip repair and even waive the deductible. Insurers would rather have you make the quick and cheap fix so you don’t have to file a windshield insurance claim later on.

What if you already have a cracked windshield? Typically, your comprehensive coverage will cover repairing a crack in your windshield if it’s less than 6 inches long — about the length of a dollar bill. Many insurers will cover the repair with no deductible as long as you use a company within the insurer’s network.

Will State Farm Car Insurance Cover Windshield Repair?

State Farm sees windshield repairs as a way to keep your insurance costs down, as it saves you from having to replace your windshield down the line. State Farm has a simple visual guide to the types of windshield chips that can be safely fixed. Typically, small breaks or chips that happen outside of the driver’s line of sight can be fixed easily without having to get a windshield replaced.

You’ll have to check with your insurance provider to see if your windshield crack repair is covered.

Can I fix a chipped or cracked windshield myself?

Windshield chip repair is an easy DIY project; windshield crack repair isn’t so simple. To fix a chipped windshield, you can buy a small DIY windshield repair kit, usually costing between $8 and $20. The process begins by clearing away all stray pieces of glass with a razor blade. You then affix a device to your windshield with suction cups to hold the repair tool precisely over your windshield chip. Add repair resin, push it down with a plunger and then cover the repaired area with finishing film for a smooth surface. As long as you follow the directions carefully, the result should be a professional-looking, nearly undetectable chip repair.

What about cracked windshield repair? Matthew Wright, auto repair guy at About Autos, reports that he couldn’t repair cracks to his satisfaction using a chip repair kit. RainX, a manufacturer of windshield repair kits, warns that DIY windshield repair might not work if the crack is longer than 12 inches, extends to the edge of the windshield or penetrates more than one layer of glass. (Windshields have two glass layers, held together in the middle by a vinyl sheet.)

In short, it’s better to call in the professionals for a cracked windshield.

Does insurance cover windshield replacement?

If you have comprehensive coverage, your auto insurance will cover windshield replacement. You will have to pay the deductible, however. Get a quote first, because if the cost of a new windshield is less than your deductible, you shouldn’t file an insurance claim. A typical windshield replacement cost is between $100 and $400, reports CostHelper.com, averaging $214. If you drive a luxury car or a rare car, the cost may be much higher.

When you’re paying out of pocket for a windshield replacement, it’s tempting to go with the cheapest option. Don’t do it, experts warn. Bargain-rate installers may put in inferior quality glass or install it incorrectly, without a proper seal. The result: a leaky windshield or worse, a windshield that pops out in an accident, raising the risk that you’ll be thrown from the car. Find registered, professional windshield repair shops on Safe Windshields.org.

Can my car pass state inspection with a cracked windshield?

If you live in Virginia, Texas, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York or one of the handful of other states that require your car to pass a state inspection, you may be wondering, Will my car pass state inspection with a crack in my windshield?

The short answer is, maybe. In Virginia, if there is a chip or crack larger than 1.5 inches, you’ll need it repaired before the car passes. Also, if the windshield is weakened by the crack or chip, you’ll be in for a windshield replacement or repair before you’ll pass. However, since the windshield is a major safety feature of the car, you’ll want to make sure it’s safe regardless of whether or not it passes.
